Artist/Song Title: David Usher – Jesus was my girl
Subject: SPN, Dean PoV
Summary: 'So he dies and I'm the joke – A playdoh mask a million miles to go.' Illusion is the first of all pleasures.
Warnings: Swearing, a smidge Wincest and no regrets
Format: stream and download at stage6 25 MB, permanent download link 720x400 – 25 MB AVI or watch on imeem

Reasons to vid ‘My Girl’? David Usher is the one artist were I feel like I could vid every single song, so actually I was thinking about vidding this particular song for years and I almost started to vid it last year after ‘Soldiering’ as contrast and to twist the father/son-relationship into completely unhealthy. It would have worked with John – But not as good as now with Sam, Season 3 and the endlessness that was ‘Jesus Christ’. This is mostly what didn’t make it, landed on the cutting floor or just didn’t fit. It’s a vidlet after a big project to come down and knowing a song by heart. Plus I couldn’t resist the irony of vidding two songs with Jesus in the title.

Lyrical interpretation: What I love about David Usher are his lyrics, they are straightforward and yet poetic at the same time. I tried to capture this spirit and while there are some double meanings in there, this is as straightforward as it gets for me. So this time I won’t explain my reasons for taking the clips I used and leave it completely up to the viewer.

The Journey? Very short indeed, less than a week.

Technical notes worth mentioning? One of the main problems I wanted to solve for the future was the logo that bugged the hell out of me. So I knew there were solutions available in avisynth and now was the time to read up on them. I finally decided to go with the xlogo filter and after tweaking the bmp around till it covered the spot I wanted covered, I was thrilled to use Season 3 footage. I also figured out how to work with mkv-files in avisynth so that Premiere won’t fuck them up and then there was this overlay function I wanted to use in the final export filter that also needed figuring out. So yeah, I think I spend more time trying to deepen my avisynth knowledge than actually vidding. I hope you don’t mind, because the result is cool.

Final note: Well this was fun and I can’t believe how fast this project came together and I hope that Sammy gets his own vid soonish. I already have two songs in mind for him. Oh, and feed the vidder, I don’t bite.

so another song title with "Jesus" in the title? and finally using David Usher vid from you, makes me feel guilty for stealing all your songs.

As always I love the look and feel of your vids. makes me smile through my confusion.

**Kiss, blood and guts.

Yeah, seems like I found my inner religion-freak. Nuh-hu. That would take more effort than the irony and therefore wouldn’t be worth the venture. It’s been over a year since my last David Usher vid, so seriously how could I resist this time around? God, I love his lyrics… *swoons*

There are enough songs I could/should vid, so no need for you to feel guilty about the ones I give up voluntary. Plus you only stole one, if I’m not completely mistaken. ‘Devil by my side’? Right? Actually I want to vid a German song for a while now, I can’t wait to see your utter confusion then.

And glad you loved the look of this, babe, if I could only suck you into this show. Damn. Seriously you are missing out on the fun this time around.

Dean is a such beautiful mess I would love to understand, so your confusion could be read as intentional from my perspective. Or that there is beauty in the breakdown. But most of all this vid is a mood piece and up for any interpretation.

Thank you for your lovely comment.

This is beautiful - like everyone else, I just can't get over what you do with the coloring. Gorgeous.

Sometimes I think I never grew out of playing with the paint-box. At least digitally I won’t need to hope that the colour won’t come out of my cloths. Heh. But thank you, I’m happy you enjoyed this vidlet, [livejournal.com profile] giandujakiss.

What a great song. I have never heard it before.

As or the vid, it is, as expected, wonderful. It didn't pack quite the same punch as 'Jesus Christ' on first viewing... but the more I watch it the more it gets under my skin. I would be very happy if you kept vidding songs wih Jesus in the title if this is the result!

LOL. I don’t think this will be a trend, I’m all out of Jesus songs at the moment.

My guess is that this vid seems very random on the first few viewings. There is a fine line between hit and miss with mood pieces and once sucked in, I hope it gets more clear what illusions Dean carries and to which he holds on with his dear life or should I say soul?

That Sam won’t change in the face of everything he sees and does as a hunter. That there is a happily ever after in his story after the death of YED, even if Dean goes to hell for him and that he is the same naïve and optimistic young man Dean dragged across the country in the first season, which is completely ignored in this vidlet for good reasons. Dean’s reputation as a hunter went to hell after he struck his deal and the devil’s gate business they were drawn in. They both attract the wrong kind of attention from women deeply involved in their world or figments of their imagination and they both have only the other to ultimately turn to, which leads to other illusions and now I stop explaining, because obviously I read too much fanfic. Yepp.

Lovely vid. I love David Usher's voice; coincidentally, I just uploaded some "Moist" albums yesterday. Looking forward to your Sam-centric vids.

Thank you, happy you enjoyed the vidlet and of course, I hope to do Sam some justice once I get around to vidding him.

This is beautiful looking. I like what it said too about the variety of roles women have had in the series so far.

This vidlet just scratches the surface, after all half of the women in here were a summoned manifestation of Dean’s subconscious desire. Perfect chimera of what he longs for in a simplified way and what gets shaken up on daily basis. So merci beaucoup for your comment and I’m delighted you enjoyed this short trip into his head.

This is really wonderful. I love the coloring and the song and above all the way you pull it all together, the pacing and the way you ended it with Sam grabbing Dean. I feel like I never quite know how to say what I like about vids, so I often feel like what I am saying doesn't really cover how I feel. But I do really love this and I've watched it so many times in a row now that I've got the song stuck in my head even though I'd never heard it before.

Thank you so much, greenapricot, and I know what you mean with the difficulties of describing why a video emotional affects you. It sometimes feels like running in a brick wall for me – The how is easier to explain. And I’m delighted you felt that way about this particular vidlet, because this was such an atmospheric vid I was aiming for.

Yay! I've always loved your visual editing ... the storyline is subtle and yet clear ... very sharp and fluid at the same time. Lovely.

*snags all your SPN vids and ran off to enjoy them*

Thank you so much for sharing!

You’re very welcome and I’m pleased you enjoyed the contradictions the video plays off on to such extend. And of course I hope you enjoy the other videos as well.

Have fun watching them and thanks for your comment!

Heh. Love the icon and thank you so much for your feedback. I think I could ramble on about vidding till ears start bleeding and then some, but glad that I didn’t scare you off.

I'm not sure I understand this video but that just means it's stuck in my head longer than anything with a simple message. It feels like everytime I watch it I pick out something new I hadn't noticed before. Even if I'm not quite there with teasing out the full meaning yet I can still appreciate the technical skill and just, wow, it's beautiful. The colouring, the transitions, the way each movement in the footage seems to be mirrored by the next clip. Vidding at its finest ♥

I don’t think there is much to understand about this vid, really, but the way to read it are endless. Believe me, I’m still sometimes surprised what I read into this little vidlet depending on my mood. Because there wasn’t a hidden message I wanted to get across or even a big game plan. Just a song I love and that I felt fit Dean and the images that were inspired by it. Very simple, very subconscious editing on my part with free associates and screwed metaphors. I’m so happy that you found it so interesting and that you enjoyed it on rewatch.
