Happy Holidays,
charmax, and a great new year!

Artist/Song Title: Barenaked Ladies - One Week
Subject: SPN, Dean & Sam PoV
Summary: ‘How can I help it if I think you're funny when you're mad?' There is no revenge so complete as forgiveness.
Format: stream and download at stage6 29 MB, permanent download link 720x400 – 29 MB AVI or watch on imeem
Reasons to vid ‘One Week’? So two years ago Charmax made me the utterly charming and light-hearted Christmas vid to ‘The way we get by’. I fell in love with the vid, it had Sam going down on the flight attended and Dean testing pot. So pretty much everything a SPN fangirl heart wants. It also sparked the desire to do an equally fun look at the brothers and their various coping mechanisms to stand being around each other 24/7 and their fight dynamic and if there is a classic song to get this task done, it is ‘One week’.
Lyrical interpretation: The song is vidded in every fandom at least once and light humor really isn’t my strong suit, so this one includes improper use of tragic scenes, some scuffles taken completely out of context and me having fun with the footage. Or how Xandra put it so correctly and my favourite summary: Inappropriate threesome invitations flying in all directions.
The Journey? This project didn’t take off that well, I was starting to make the vid, when another SPN for the same song popped up. So I had it on the backburner for the last eighteen months, editing when I couldn’t bare the angst any longer and needed a day break from my other SPN projects or had to poke fun at all the man pain my show inflicted. It was in truth good to have it to go back to it frequently.
Technical notes worth mentioning? More avisynth knowledge gathered for the final encode and additional filters and stuff, so just me randomly playing around till the picture looked pretty amazingly clean for the 30 MB output.
Final note: For one of the most amazing persons I know and all-around art genius, Charmax. My life wouldn’t be the same without you in it. I love you, my darling angel.

I has a shiny vid dedicated to me, I is goddess! :D I do love the inappropriate angsty man pain, which is so very pretty but also so deserving of mockery. Fun, fun fun and just exactly what I wanted for Christmas, I do believe in Santa!
*big hugs*
Merry Christmas.

Merry Christmas to you too and slightly off topic, but did my package arrive? I thought that it could get a close call, but still… Hopeful thinking on my part? Damn, I knew the German mailing service better than that. There is no way it will be on time with them.
And I’m happy you loved the served inappropriate non-angst man pain light in all its mockery glory, because it is entertaining to watch and was even more entertaining to vid. This vid saved my sanity on various occasions as a matter of fact, especially during the never-ending ‘Wood and nails’ and I’m happy you satisfied with you Santa, babe!

After I left you the comment this morning the postman arrived and he did bring me your parcel! It's big! *squee* I shan't open it until tomorrow though even though it's staring at me right now and being all tempting. It made it just in time didn't it? :D
I've just got home from watching "St Trinians" at the cinema which was fun and girly but now I need me some more One week to round off the afternoon frivolity before the heavy drinking starts.
Have a great evening, love!

The huge gingerbread Nürnberger Lebkuchen are my absolute favourites too. They are a more of a Bavarian speciality and actually fairly famous – I was so happy to find them in Munich for you and me. Hah. About the perfume – surely more of a summer scent, but remember the one time we exchanged favourites? Mango was mentioned and I couldn’t resist.
I was a tad worried about the sound toy, not that someone at custom suddenly thought there were some real animals in it. Although in the end with all the chocolate to mute it, I couldn’t hear it when shaking. And wasn’t it perspicacious to take the toys with the English description? To not confuse them with feathered sex toys? *chuckles* Delighted to know your cats love them, mine aren’t too crazy about the one I bought for them. Actually they go into hiding – must be the lack of blood for Joy and my shrieking response to Dean shredding important documents and Storm isn’t into games anyway.
I’m truly happy you have such fun with your presents, love and hope you had a wonderful Christmas as well. *hugs tight*

The cats have already consumed all their treats and are well on their way to obliterating the toys, squeaky toy has even persuaded grumpy old Tinker to run about.
Have a great New Year and a prosperous 2008 good health and happiness to you and yours.

And I’m sad to say, that I have no idea who the man with the crack pipe could be! *snickers* Must be some traditional tourist item they sell exclusively to travellers like a Kuckucksuhr or it could be the ‘Alm-Öhi’ from Heidi. But I’m not sure.
Although I love the historic artisan market here in my village more – Its famous in the whole region and goes on the whole November in an old half-timbered house. Expensive as hell, but the icons are truly unique and handmade – So it is actually a lot more dangerous than a Christmas market for my purse.
And I hope you had a wonderful New Years Eve and also an incredible 2008 for you and your beloved ones, my darling angel.

The smoking men looked very pretty and traditional in context so I can forgive them being a tourist gimmick. :D I am pretty resistant when it comes to craft fairs so I think I'd be able to resist the charms of handmade icons, nevertheless it sounds like a fun way to pass time and waste money.
Of course I remember the ornament you sent me, I love it. It's got pride of place on the tree!
New Years was quiet but nice, I hope you enjoyed yours.

I’m so happy for you and your determination to get your life back. That is the most important step you have to take and you’re done it. *hugs*
I was talking with my sis yesterday and she thinks the smoking man might be a traditional ‘Wurzelmann’ (root man) from the Black Forrest – men carved out of roots. It’s likely she is right. And yeah, I’m resistant when it comes to Christmas market, but everything else seems fair game to waste money.

So without further delays my final encode script was:
LoadPlugin("C:\Windows\dfttest.dll")
AVISource("C:\Mixed\One Week\oneweek-astarte.avi")
ConvertToYUY2
tweak(sat=1.10)
clip1 = AVISource("C:\Mixed\One Week\oneweek-astarte.avi")
farbe1 = ImageReader("C:\Mixed\One Week\maske1.bmp", start=1, end=2250, fps=25)
Overlay(clip1, farbe1, opacity=0.2, mode="hardlight")
ConvertToYUY2
tweak(sat=1.2, bright=-16, cont=1.25)
dfttest(sigma=1.5)
MSharpen(strength=45)
temporalcleaner()
LanczosResize(720,400)
The image mask for additional colour tweaking and darker edges was this one (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v732/xAstartex/maske1.jpg) as bmp. You see that the tweak sets the saturation up two times and in the second one, I add a tad darkness and more contrast. I think what also needs a bit of an explanation is the dfttest – download here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=132194) - it’s a denoiser and responsible for the smoothness. sigma=1.5 is a pretty high setting, but what I had in mind for this vid. I usually prefer a bit of a grittier look than this, on the other hand I just found this filter and was giddy with the results. MSharpen for additional sharpness and the temporalcleaner is pretty self-evident. I put this avs-script through VirtualDubMod and exported it with the Huffy codec, a lossless one, and got a 2 GB file which I then put through the divx converter in the Home Theater Mode without any additional tweaking.
On a final note, I keep my DVD scripts for editing very basic, they look something like this:
mpeg2source("C:\Mixed\Supernatural\Season 2\Index\SPN2x01-2x04.avs.d2v", cpu=4)
Or for a TV show, I don’t have DVDs yet and without a logo:
FFmpegSource("C:\Mixed\Supernatural\Season 3\Supernatural 3x01 The Magnificent Seven.mkv")
Trim(0,56312)
converttoRGB32 xlogo("C:\Mixed\Supernatural\Season 3\cwlogo2.bmp",868,564,5)
LanczosResize(720,596)
AssumeFPS(25)
In general I don’t run into any interlacing problems with my PAL DVDs – except one time with a Deadwood DVD completely at random, but not with my SPN so far, which makes my life a lot easier. All of my additional filters come into the final script and I don’t mind half an hour for VirtualDubMod export with them, because it doesn’t slow my editing down and essentially things can be tweaked there. If you have any questions just shot, I really like talking about scripts and stuff and sadly nobody is interested. *chuckles*
(no subject)
First off, thanks so much for the denoiser link. I'm always on the look out for stuff like that. And second thanks so much for sharing your scripts! I'm a total novice at Avisynth and so far I've stuck pretty much with the basics. So seeing things that refer to Image Ready and Overlays is way over my head but fascinating.
Does this mean your mask was actually inputted into the video using Avisynth and not with an alpha channel in your editing program? And if you have some commands twice like tweak and ConvertToYUY2 because the second set refers to your mask or "clip1", then how does the script know that the lower scripts such as MSharpen and the resize refer to both? I'm not even sure where to start with questions about clip1 and farbe. *lol*
Glad my curiosity about the transitions got the better of me. This has been neat. Thanks for the tips!
(no subject)
And you’re welcome and like I said, I’m more than happy to talk about this stuff, even when I can’t answer everything. Sharing scripts on the other hand is fun, especially if you can compare them to your own and how they vary from each other.
Onto the ImageReady integrate into the overlay – Previously I had my colouration mask as overlay layer in my editing program, so I was looking into that – knowing that Avisynth must have a solution for that particular problem. I’m not sure if the solution is optimal, because I miss the screen-mode, but yeah, the mask is in the script not the editing program. Same is possible for the watermark, for example:
water = ImageReader("C:\Mixed\premiere\newsignature.jpg")
Overlay(water, opacity=0.5, mode="lighten")
So in future I will do the watermark in Avisynth also.
Basically I look at scripts the same way as html – out of the corner of my eye and suspicious. But I use AvsP (http://avisynth.org/qwerpoi/) as script editor and it’s perfect for instant previewing with F5 or telling you what might be wrong with the script. For example the first ConvertToYUY2 was installed so that I could tweak the saturation the second one was for the bmp I think.
Newest script for example is:
LoadPlugin("C:\Windows\dfttest.dll")
AVISource("C:\Mixed\Deadwood Take me home\takemehome.avi")
ConvertToYUY2
tweak(sat=0.15, hue=138)
farbe1 = ImageReader("C:\Mixed\Deadwood Take me home\xandra-lying2.bmp", start=1, end=4838, fps=25)
Overlay(farbe1, opacity=0.4, mode="softlight")
ConvertToYUY2
clip1 = AVISource("C:\Mixed\Deadwood Take me home\takemehome.avi")
Overlay(clip1, opacity=0.5, mode="add")
dfttest(sigma=0.75)
MSharpen(strength=45)
tweak(sat=1.5, bright=5, cont=1.5)
temporalcleaner()
water = ImageReader("C:\Mixed\premiere\newsignature.jpg")
Overlay(water, opacity=0.5, mode="lighten")
With the Overlay(farbe1, opacity=0.4, mode="softlight") I actually did this time what I tried with the last script, do an overlay on top of all the changes I previously made with the original source of takemehome.avi. Last time I just made an overlay on top of the original source with sadly no changes taken into account.
Here I do an overlay with the original source to bring back the colour with:
clip1 = AVISource("C:\Mixed\Deadwood Take me home\takemehome.avi")
Overlay(clip1, opacity=0.5, mode="add")
The overlay function as far as I understand it now does either make a simple overlay on top with all changes realized or if you define two specific clips. Also all changes and tweaks refer always to the whole script, if you don’t exclude them and you can do that also, but don’t ask me how. Next time maybe… *laughs*

Also the bit about the 'samurai'? where the hell did Sam get the massive knife!?!

It was fun to dive a bit into the very typical sibling rivalry for once and let the outside or supernatural forces be. They will be surely back with the next vid.
