Artist/Song Title: Imogen Heap - Clear The Area
Subject: TXF, Scully PoV
Summary: ‘You find your way back down and I'll keep the area clear.’ Trust one who has gone through it - Scully isn’t looking at the sky for answers.
Format: 720x400 – 31.5 MB AVI, mediafire, megaupload, sendspace, permanent download link or watch on imeem

It doesn’t feel like just the second full length XF vid. Maybe because I vidded this show for so long in my head, you know, before I actually started vidding. But onto the vid notes:

Reasons to vid ‘Clear the Area’? My XF vids are at their core with all the layers ripped off about the plain fact that Scully is beyond awesome and this one is no exception to that particular rule – more reinforcement actually. What drawn me into the song was how the lyrics touched on so many aspects of her character without musically sounding like a typical song you would vid for Scully. There is almost a dreamlike quality to it and that worked great with the visuals of the alien technology and of course the UFOs. I loved to include these tiny bits and pieces of the mythology throughout the vid. Sure, a bigger picture is going on, but in the end for me the show always came down to Scully and Mulder and their relationship. The two simply shined together and completed each other.

I think one of the most difficult things regarding vidding ‘The X Files’ is simply the nine seasons and the movie – I will restrain my squee for the second one here, but I'm excited. Anyway, the endless possibilities to choose from are hard to take and the complexity of their relationship can't be shown in three minutes. You just can’t include every layer and yet you always try. You want to use fresh clips, yet you don’t want to lose your audience in the ‘Guess what ep?’-game. It’s the beauty of the source that you can hint at whole arcs with a seven frame shot, if you drag the right scene on your timeline. I’m not sure how successful ‘Clear the area’ converts the epic MSR, but for me it brings out Scullys strong protection of Mulder. He will get into trouble - She will give him a verbal smack down or a shoulder to lean on depending on how fucked up his state of mind is – And everything is right in the world again.

Lyrical interpretation: When I first considered this song for vidding Scully Mulders abduction immediately came to mind. But I didn’t want to construct a video around the absence of Mulder in Season 8 and 9. Even with all my love for the show, I couldn’t bring myself to get too deep into that particular mess. So I thought, why not start with the beginning? And we open on Scully in the pilot staring into the white light and we end with her staring into the black void of having cancer and just having seen a death omen and Mulder isn’t really of use solving these two problems for her. Which is at least true for one of the two.

So full circle again – I tend to do that in my vids - , Scully is facing her fears alone, because she can. She is capable and in the three minutes in between we see a lot of her confronting obstructions head-on. I couldn’t resist a voiceover at the beginning and while I was tempted to use their first exchange after Mulder regained consciousness and her, ‘Do you know – Do you have any idea what you’ve been through?’ My choice fell on a more ironic statement in hindsight. The quote at the end sums up the question she must have asked herself silently at least a hundred times over the curse of the series and after every stunt Mulder pulled.

There is spreading paranoia. There is Scully accepting the paranormal possibility and still holding onto her beliefs. There is Mulder in need of saving, because of his impulsive ways of getting into danger. There is some sort of understanding - light-hearted and complex.

There are parallels and opposites and there is unconditional love. It’s rather simple.

The Journey? Well I started this project back in January as a birthday present for [livejournal.com profile] charmax and the first two minutes came together fast, then I hit the vidder block and let my writing muse reign for a while. After three months passing coming back to the vid let me solve the difficulties I had with the end and generally tiding things over. Which means I’m just two months late for the birthday party. Uhm, okay then, I don’t need any reason to dedicate a vid to my darling angel.

Technical notes worth mentioning? Nothing fancy – some filtering in Avisynth. There are fast cuts, a bit of black/white to emphasis these and enjoying the improvement of the special effect department during the show run and getting nostalgic for the dark lightning in the first seasons. Oh, and that I really, really love to vid in 16:9 – I had a flashback to ‘Crazy beautiful’ in the middle of this and it’s hard to explain to non-vidders the freedom you get from widescreen. It doesn’t feel like you are focussed strictly on the middle of the screen, you just get room on the left and right to free the eye.

Final note: This was fun and I have no idea why I force [livejournal.com profile] charmax to endure videos in fandoms she isn’t fully invested, when she drops hints with the ones she vids, but I guess that what makes our bond special. And once again so much thanks for [livejournal.com profile] xandra_ptv and her mad betaing skills that pretty much come down to verbally kicking my ass and that means that I’m the Mulder in our relationship and that is all sorts of wrong, which makes it right again.

‘Nuff said, hope you enjoy the video.

I will probably be a bit late in answering the comments, this week is insanely busy - Just a fair warning.

Stranger!

A gift is a gift and it’s better late than never.

This gives me chills. It’s so very atmospheric with the lighting and blue hues. I love how you kinda have the intertwined stories of Mulder’s quest and Scully’s illness. It almost feels like dual povs, not in the sense of literally changing to Mulder’s pov but more like it’s as if Scully narrates Mulder’s perception of her cancer and places it in context of his own search for answers, so that I really feel we get a sense of his feelings, hence the dual pov because it‘s not really about how she feels about her cancer but about how he feels about it. Heh I don’t know if that makes sense.

I have a very similar song in sentiment that has been sitting in my “vid me X-Files songs!” folder looking at me with pleading eyes but the shear amount of clipping needed unnerves me to say the least. Plus, although I love Scully dearly I don’t feel I *know* the show as well as I should. I devoured the first 5 seasons really quickly but have stalled three times in my efforts to get through season 6. I’ve mostly lost interest in the wider mythology at this point even though I still enjoy individual episodes. Scully remains fascinating and multi-faceted to me so I’m sure I’ll make that Scully vid at some point.

Another thing I really like, you have Scully always being Mulder’s rock, because she was. No matter what demons Scully had of her own she would always be there to fight another day with him, be by his side. That was their devotion. Also, towards the end of the vid you have the montage of clips of things that “could’ve been”, the quick shot of the foetus in the jar sums up that section for me, I think. I also think the “I want to believe” poster followed by Scully jerking awake is particularly powerful in this section.

I’m loving the idea of Scully keeping the area clear. She’s always doing that, keeping the real world at bay and dealing with awkward truths in order for him to carry on with his single-minded pursuit. He is such a little boy sometimes and she always has to protect him.

Love it and you.

So very, very happy you love your gift and me still, even after all that shameless stalling – There really is no detour around a vidder block in the mist of a project except time and some distance.

When I first sent Xandra the song I said, that I wanted to create a reverie atmosphere, very moody and with lots of blue and no weepy Scully. She said go for it and you are right, I so wanted to show Scully as Mulder’s rock, grounding him to this earth. This sums up the vid perfectly for me. Because she was in from the moment she first saw that white light and her curiosity was awaken. The death of her sister was for me the moment Scully could never turn her back on the X files - Mulder’s quest became hers and every stumbling block just strengthened her determination to get at the bottom of the conspiracy.

And really it feels like Scully arrived at every shitty point first.

Mulder’s search for Samantha ended in him realizing that she was long gone. Scully’s abduction and the resulting cancer, the prospect of never having children. Of everything that was stolen from her and done to her by these old men orchestrating these abductions, the colonization of the planet and their weak try at creating a vaccine.

Did you know, that I can wiggle the mythology into earth logic till the end of season 8? Which was when I stopped watching the show when it originally aired with the warm and fuzzy self-deception of ‘And from now on Mulder will take care of the baby, Scully will provide an income, so he can be a stay at home dad and they live happily in Scully’s flat with lots of hot sex and the occasional field trip to the outer space.’ Xandra added later the layer of frequent phone calls and Scully going, ‘No, Mulder, you can’t show William the corn circles in freaking England. Stop calling me in the middle of this autopsy, I won’t change my mind. Go in the park instead.’ And Mulder rattling down statistics comparing the dangers of the park to his little adventure. Aww, good times.

Anyways, I always thought that Scully found it easier to fight instead of confronting her own demons – She didn’t repressed them, but given the choice between reflecting upon the pain inflicted on her or taking care of Mulder’s mental health? Well, there really was no tough choice for her. I think the endearing little boy in Mulder, his crazy ideas and his ivory tower of conspiracy made her life a lot more fun and balanced the pain nicely. Which is part of why Season 8 and her search for Mulder is particularly painful.

Knowing that Mulder was in the same position when she was plain kidnapped only made it harder. The extra pressure and stress of her pregnancy. Scully had nobody to bounce off ideas, distract her from her fears or focus on. Nobody that lets her feel like she is the sane person in the room, because she had all this hard gained knowledge and she knew how she must sound and yet, she wouldn’t deny the truth of the things she had seen and experienced and accepted. Besides they should have introduced Monica Reyes as her partner and Doggett later and it still could have been more entertaining.

But that is me rambling, so lets get this comment back on track.

The main mythology eps of season 6, especially 6x11 and 6x12 Two Fathers/One Son did an excellent job of solving some loose end and tighten the plot again. Yeah, I guess the puzzle and the individual pieces won’t match up. I was geekily into this stuff back then and like I said, I could follow it till the end of season 8 and fill in the plot holes with some conspiracy creativity.

OMG. This was so AWESOME.
The editing is perfect and the transition is like so natural..Everything was perfect, i don't even imagine the time it take to make a video like that.

I'm gonna check all your vids now to find some inspiration lol

thanks and make more please ;)

Thank you for your awesome comment. Heh. I had a blast making this vid, so time really doesn’t count and my inner perfectionist just gets more demanding the longer I vid. Even when I have the feeling that I start to simple effects down again. But I’m so flattered you feel inspired and loved the video. Have fun watching the others and thank you again for your wonderful comment.

Wow. I'm blown away by this! I say this all the time, when leaving feedback on fanfic that intimidates the hell out of me as a writer, but I feel the same way about fantastically constructed vids; vids like yours. They're the sort of things that make me rather terrified of ever breaking open that Adobe Premiere box I've got lying around.

I loved "Move," and I love this as well, though I knew I would before I even downloaded the file. It's difficult for me to get into Scully's head, as a writer or a viewer, but you've made it work seamlessly for me twice now. I also love that we see Mulder through her eyes, and this commentary you've woven is an honest interpretation of both of them, not just one. It brings an image to mind of Scully as her mother, a Navy wife, waiting on the shores of the universe for Mulder, her sailor of the stars, to come home.

Love it, and please keep vidding. Yours is some of the best stuff out there.

WOW – Thank you for this incredible feedback, I’m actually working against my speechlessness here trying to come up with a good response. Last night when I watched the final export I had this ridiculous thought of, ‘Oh, they are the real deal of star-crossed lovers.’ Literally. That was before I decided it was time for another coffee.

Still, they have so much rich history and unanticipated discoveries between them, it’s a joy to vid them and focus on their strength. On the obstacles they have overcome instead of the losses. Especially with Scully. I love to portray her as smart, strong and confident, because there is no reason to dilute her skills as Special Agent or doubt her dedication and devotion to Mulder and his search for the truth. She overcomes the problems life throws at her and as viewer this is what I want to see. The conflict and the solution.

About vidding, it is intimidating and you always learn something new with each and every project. But it is also utter bliss when the story you want to tell comes alive before your eyes. For me writing is about world-building and breaking out of canon and run wild with an idea to places my shows could never go. Vidding is a way to remember what I loved about characters or relationships and what moved me in the beginning. I think that is the reason why I always go back and forth between vidding and writing. So you should unpack that Pandora’s Box and enjoy the rollercoaster ride vidding brings.

Wow! This is incredible! I've always loved this song for Mulder and Scully (and Harry/Hermione ahem), but this vid -- it's playful, quick, comprehensive, sweet, moving. It shows so much. The sense of movement is engaging; there's so much "content" I'm looking forward to watching it multiple, multiple times and putting it all together. Thank you for this!

You’re welcome and I’m thrilled by your eagerness to rewatch. And yes, when I listened to the song my brain instantly went, ‘Oh damn, this is an ideal Scully PoV – must vid - now.’ I just loved the tone of it and the lyrics, I just knew what kind of vid I wanted to make for it. And I’m happy you enjoyed it so much, thank you for your wonderful comment.

This was lovely. You really did a great job with the song - the cuts are sort of counterintuitive but they work really well. And I love how you used the images with the dialogue at the beginning.

I probably shouldn’t mention here that I read up on some editing theories a few weeks ago or that I don’t think I will ever be a vidder that can cut strictly on beat and not consider the lyrics as anchor point. ‘Clear the area’ was an interesting experiment in that regard and I think I learned a few things here for the future. And merci beaucoup for the feedback.

This is so fantastic. I watched it three times before I felt satisfied. Your Scully vids speak so clearly - it feels like I truly encounter the character when I watch them, and I think I like this one the best. I also love your way of skating-around-but-still-including the later seasons. It's difficult to get them to fit into the fabric of the rest of the series, but you are definitely able to do it here. I feel the same Mulder and Scully coming through. The last minute or so is also just amazing; my heart skipped a few beats.

I am a very inexperienced vidder, so pardon the naive question - but how do you manage to use so many short clips from so many different places? I imagine you can't be ripping them all individually (which is what I do) - is there something less tedious? :)

Thanks so much for sharing this, it's amazing!

I’m so sorry to answer your question so damn late, but RL interfered and I hope this can still be useful, so here we go. I prefer vidding with the whole series in my project, this is my preference. I know vidders that do clip like you, for example Charmax and others that have also the same flavour of OCD and ‘Isn’t it fun to scan through nine hours of timeline to find that one second shot, which will be cut down to three frames later in the project?’ like Xandra and me. It really depends on your individual approach of vidding, what is more to your liking.

The way I do it, is described here (http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/avtech/amvappintro.html) and you can find the whole guide (http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/avtech/). Basically I have the whole series ripped on an external hard drive. The DVD indexed and then as an avisynth-file imported into Premiere. For avisynth you just need the vobs indexed, so no extra space for encodes of the clips. Because there are only so many avs-scripts Premiere can handle, I actually alter the scripts so I can import half a season. Reducing the scripts from one per DVD to two per season. Looking like this named S1.1AtS1x01-1x11.avs:

mpeg2source("X:\AtS\Index\AtS1x01-1x04.d2v", cpu=4) ++ mpeg2source("X:\AtS\Index\AtS1x05-1x08.d2v", cpu=4) ++ mpeg2source("X:\AtS\Index\AtS1x09-1x11.d2v", cpu=4)
Telecide(order=1,guide=2)
Crop(8,40,-8,-104)
LanczosResize(720,576)
ConvertToRGB32()

Just pretend for a moment that this is TXF instead of AtS, its the same pattern – I’m also doing the resize to 16:9 here, something I need for TXF as well. The obvious downside to my method is that you have nine hours of timeline to find your scenes. But my reasoning is that this way is still faster then clipping every single scene I want to use and I have various cutting tools in Premiere at hand and my project-timeline to throw the clips at. So with a good memory and perhaps an ep guide nearby you can easily navigate around. Also this way you can find gems and scenes you have long forgotten about. You can use the scripts for every TXF-project, one big drawback is that you need hard drive space – a lot - for a series like TXF easily around 400 GB with all nine seasons ripped.

Okay, I think my explanation actually didn’t answer a lot of questions and instead raised some. So if you have any, feel free to ask.

Oh, and of course thank you for your wonderful feedback.

An amazing video!! Leucocrystal pointed me to your journal and I'm glad she did!

I love the coloring and the not-so-famous clips you chose to drive the message of the video. Fantastic!! I don't often download videos as they must really impress me to do so (As a vidder myself, I'm hard to impress. lol.) but I'm definitely downloading this one. I love it!

Merci beaucoup and I get what you mean with downloading vids that make an impression. Streaming nowadays just makes it so much easier to filter out the vids that don’t hit my buttons and I still my vid folder is over 10 GB last time I checked. Once I have downloaded I can’t seem to bring myself to delete them in good conscience.

But I'm happy you enjoyed 'Clear the area' so much and thanks for your feedback.

Here from [livejournal.com profile] emily_shore. I am not a vid person; I just watch the ones she says are great. Although I am a very visual person, I have a hard time processing the rapidity of the images in vids and yours is no exception. Having said that, I did think yours was outstanding. I watched it yesterday and found myself thinking about it afterwards and liking it enough to want to see it again. I did watch it again today and I think I saw a little bit more than before. I am not a Mulder/Scully shipper either, but you seem to see how much more they are together than just a conventional romance. I look forward to seeing your work in the future.

I edited this comment to add:
That was a really powerful vid. I watched it again this morning. It opened up something for me about the MSR on the show, in the same way that the " Kinda I Want To" vid did for the Mulder/Krycek. It made me see the show from a different point of view.

Edit the second: I added it memories because I know I will want to view it again and again. Thank you for sharing your talent.

I’m so sorry that I reply so late, but RL has been busy lately and I finally been able to wrestle away from it, so to get to your wonderful comment. What I love with your two edits is the way I can see the vid is growing on you and that the best thing a vidder can hope for.

It’s so easy to forget how difficult it can be to get into a vid on the first view, because as vidder you’ve seen your vid countless times and you don’t come even close to the feeling of discovery when you watch it with a few days in-between drafts.

And of course to actually highlight an aspect of the show and make it seen from a slightly different angle is a vidder dream come true. I’m really thrilled you could take that from my vid and for me Scully/Mulder are not conventional, but everything that should be labelled love. Not always easy to grasp, because there are so many layers in their relationship and I adore every single one. Seriously, thank you for this feedback and I'm so happy, you loved the vid.

You penguins are dancing for three minutes straight perfectly in synch to the song I'm currently listening - I'm not sure if I should be plain freaked out or learn something to vid on beat or be beyond amused. I just can't look away...

I always wanted someone to vid it and I'm thrilled to see you've done it justice. The voiceover is perfect, the hues beautiful, the editing flawless. And thank you so much for this huge compliment and I’m glad you enjoyed the vid so much. It was certainly fun to make and I had the colouring down with my first draft, the blue just seemed perfect for the dream vibe of the song and it made everything prettier.

This vid is entirely made of awesome! TXF was my fandom a long, long time ago when the Internet was young, but this made me feel love for the characters like it was just yesterday.

I had to watch it straight through twice before I was able to tear myself away enough to comment, and now that I'm here I don't really know what to say, I'm still so blown away by all the emotion and the lyrics and the clips and how everything just works.

You had me at "knock, knock", which raised my expectations for how I was going to like the vid sky high - and the rest of it didn't let me down even for a second! Fantastic experience. Thank you!

So happy you enjoyed the vid so much, I just loved vidding it. It really inspired all those happy memories I had with these two characters and the fandom. There were so many great moments in the show were Scully just shined brilliantly.

I tried to capture what I love most about Scully, the changes and how she remained true to herself. That her integrity not only saved herself, but Mulder as well and this vid was a celebration of that.

I’m so happy that you enjoyed the ride, that is always wonderful to hear. Thank you.

I haven't seen X-files in forever, but oh, is this beautiful; it brings back all the love I once bore for the series, and Scully, and Mulder/Scully. Gorgeous!

Thank you, I’m glad you felt that way and I was feeling pretty nostalgic in a good way myself during vidding ‚Clear the area‘.

Oh my, this is SUCH an amazing vid. [livejournal.com profile] rivkat linked to it and I'm SO glad I came over here to check it out. The X Files is my original and One True Fandom, and I love Mulder and Scully so much that it hurts. I love what you've created here. Thank you!

Thank you for your lovely comment. I’m happy that you enjoyed the vid so much – TXF was my One True Fandom for so long and Scully is still my favourite, I really tried to capture why she was such a beautiful character and inspired my love for her.

I would really like to see this video, but I am having a hard time finding it, or at least making it work.. do you still have it online somewhere?

Thanks,
Rose
