Artist/Song Title: Ani DiFranco - God's Country
Subject: SPN, Jo PoV
Release Date: 2010-02-11
Summary: ’Move over Mr. Holiness and let the little people through.‘ Jo is growing up in interesting times.
Format: 720x400 - 24 MB AVI mediafire, 720x400 - 24 MB AVI or watch on BAM

Not really much to say about this vid, it was done fast and dirty. I heard the song while my mp3-player was on shuffle and it seemed like an interesting take on Jo’s journey and how meeting the Winchesters had an impact in her life. I tried to stay away from being overly melodramatic and so the whole thing came out rather straight forward.
Mood:: 'good' good

That's really gorgeous. It's just sort of quietly heartbreaking, such a gret character study of Jo that focuses on more than just the action moments, and I love your attention to the figures within the frame, just how everyone's placed relative to everyone else.

The song really sets the mood for a quiet heartbreak. I vigorously picked a few moments in between to remind the viewer how young Jo was and how protected she grew up compared to the Winchesters. And yeah, there is no sense in too many close ups, so shaking it up was a lot fun, too.

Fast and dirty, i love you like that. The vid isn't bad either even though I have no idea what's going on in context.

Good job, love.

Not too bad for someone who hasn’t touched Premiere in over half a year. It started to slightly bug me when I had to look up shit I once knew – But I like my new solutions to some script problems more. I think I now found the true frame change to PAL and not just the shabby fix to spread the frames out. I know, you are not interested in this fuckery when it doesn’t apply to your problems.

Oh this is perfect and heartbreaking! Such a great song choice and your editing is so flowy and amazing. A wonderful representation of Jo. I particularly love the line at 0:12 "i've seen it in my mirror" . Very awesome.

I wanted to have her looking at Ellen there and silently admitting that her mom is indeed her mirror in many ways. The song was so perfect after I cut the first few lyrics and I’m flattered you thought my editing was flowy, because it felt very clunky and out of shape in a few places to me.

Oh, *Jo*. Straightforward suits her.

Really well-done character vid.

It really does – and I was not in the mood for false sentimentality, so I’m glad you think it’s an honest representation of Jo.

Oh, that was excellent. Jo deserved so much better.

She did – but that’s what fanfics/vids/arts are for and kick-ass AUs. On the other hand I’m so happy for the glimpses of the more mature Jo we got.

This was... just wow. I'm still having word forming problems but it was just insanely good. I like how you layered the new and the old, the sad and the badass... this...

Oh how I missed you.

Aw, thank you so much, Mary, this is an awesome feedback and exactly what I was going for. And I’m so grateful that I still have the power to turn your brain into mush – It’s an awesome power to have. *tackle hug*

This is heartbreaking and fantastic and so very Jo and her journey. The song choice is perfect, ("I'm gonna put in three 'cause history owes me one" -- YES) and the pacing and content capture who Jo is just wonderfully. Thank you for putting this out in the world. :)

That line just works on so many levels with Jo, heh. And I really loved going back and see Jo stumble a little bit in the insanity of her life. It’s such a refreshing contrast to see her later and how comfortable she grew in her own skin. I’m so happy you enjoyed the vid and thanks for the lovely comment.

This is awesome. Well done. I'm all for straightforward over melodramatic, and I'm happy that you ended with something other than Jo's death. I didn't feel like crying over that one again. I prefer denial. (Well, it worked with Ash!)

There is a certain part of me that is still in denial and another that says that death rarely stopped a character from reappearing in SPN, but yeah, I feel your pain. Strangely I never even considered Jo’s death at the end of the vid, it just didn’t fit with the narrative and what I wanted for this vid.

Great vid, Astarte, glad to see you back on form. Missed you.

This would fit nicely in [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon. Not sure if you've heard about it? It runs until the 14th of this month and it's a comm that shines focus on female characters. It's for vids, fic, art etc.

Certainly not on form, I’m still surprised that I got the green light from Xandra to post this, my luck was her not knowing the source, I’m sure of it. – Otherwise she would have beaten me with blunt instruments and then stapled my organs to the wall. Great, now I feel cheated out of a great experience. Anyways, I’m just relieved that for once I finished a vid so that this didn’t end up in the sad growing pile of WiPs on my hard drive and therefore I’m very forgiving towards all its obvious imperfections. Besides Ani DiFranco is the one artist that gets me to vid notoriously fast for my snail standard.

Oh, I totally forgot that it was already time for halfamoon, I should check their entries out for this year. I love that comm so fucking much.

wow, it's actually funny, just yesterday I was like, "I wish astarte would make a new vid..." oO

I really loved the line "thank you for the ticket now can I leave?" somehow it was so...right? You really did a great job choosing that clip from 5x10 - it was so heartbreaking.

posted by [identity profile] astartexx.livejournal.com at 04:32am on 13/02/2010
I have such a huge soft spot for forehead touching, it feels like such an intimate gesture and hits my kinks so hard it’s not even funny. I knew that that clip would end up somewhere in my vids the moment I saw it and that line was just right for it.

And wow, the vid was excellently timed for you then. Heh. Sometimes I win at life. Happy you enjoyed the vid and hopefully the next one won’t take as long.

I like how you summarise Jo here with all her bravado and vulnerability.

So achy and lovely.

I just wanted to let you know, the second link is going to a 404 message and the BAM video link requires a sign-in.

posted by [identity profile] astartexx.livejournal.com at 04:35am on 13/02/2010
Aw, thank you so much, I fixed the link there was a random space character on the preview line break there, no idea how that got in. Not sure about BAM – I checked with Xandra and she says that it’s normal. Maybe you don’t need to sign in for embedded videos, but otherwise it is necessary.

WOW. This was amazing. What a wonderful character study of Jo, a vid remarkably full of hope for how sadly I know it ends for her. Gorgeous. I'll be saving this one to rewatch.

Merci beaucoup and the song was amazing to work for in context of Jo’s journey. Like you said it has a hopeful and expectant note to it with a smudge of wariness and the lyrics really clicked for Jo.

posted by [identity profile] bofoddity.livejournal.com at 06:36pm on 12/02/2010
This got me all teary-eyed! Straight-forward and sincere, just like Jo herself was, and really captures the unfairness of her story.

posted by [identity profile] astartexx.livejournal.com at 04:37am on 13/02/2010
I would have loved to see her not die and you know, pop up randomly being all, ‘I have a river of blood on my hands and that’s truly your field of expertise, Winchesters. Care to take over from me?’ Although all things considered I was happy that we got two eps in the fifth season with her, instead of none. But back to the subject, I’m delighted that you enjoyed the vid and felt that it portrayed her true to herself.

Or kick angel butt in heaven, because everybody knows that they are dicks. Glad you enjoyed the vid too.

I feel like I might get my creative output back on track, but that might be false hope. In the meantime we’ll see what I’m actually able to finish and post.

How I loved those lines about him having a gun and history owing her one. Particularly apt given the context of this show. Great Jo vid, I really enjoyed it.

What I particular loved about the song was the way I could keep Jo’s inexperience and build her up to the remarkable lady she became.
