Artist/Song Title: Brand New – Jesus Christ
Subject: SPN, Dean PoV
Summary: ‘Jesus Christ, I’m not scared to die, but I’m a little bit scared of what comes after.’ Dean made a deal with the wrong side, but it’s not like the other did him any good.

One year and one week after my last Supernatural vid, it’s finally time for a new one. Dean again and this time around, we’ll dig a little bit into his beliefs or lack therefore. [livejournal.com profile] charmax ‘Deus Ibi Est’ can be read as a John counterpoint to ‘Jesus Christ’ and I swear we didn’t intend the father/son-analogy in the titles, but there it is. We even started our vids completely unaware that the other was up to something creepy comparable in the meantime. The discovery was spooky, let me tell you that.

Reasons to vid ‘Jesus Christ’? I think my first conscious thought of this vid while listening to the song on repeat writing AtS-fic was: “Oh, I think SPN fandom would agree with ‘Jesus Christ, that's a pretty face. The kind you'd find on someone that could save.’” I have to confess that was the mental hook in all its shallow glory; the starting point for a video that evolved back burning on my mind while the second season slowly came to an end. I try to not make it about poor broken Dean, who couldn’t help himself and needed to trade his afterlife for his brother alive again, because there wasn’t another alternative available. It’s about a man who has some deep-seated faith issues. A few convictions and doesn’t believe in a master plan set in stone or that he deserves any kind of forgiveness for his past mistakes. His father lay his life down for him and his brother got killed right before his eyes – hell can’t get much worse and is probably the thing he deserves anyway. So the narration gets deliberate jumpy right from the start and I dearly hope that doesn’t pull anyone out of the vid going ‘WtF?’, because it all makes sense in my head.

Lyrical interpretation: First of all the song doesn’t sound like Dean, even when the narrator has the right mix between sarcasm, snark and sincere curiosity. While I could camouflage the offness of the acoustic sound in ‘To be Ghost’ with the shire rightness of the lyrics, it isn’t necessary true with ‘Jesus Christ’. Partly because while the lyrics come very close to what I would expect from Dean’s scattered take on belief, god and afterlife, it’s hard to translate why I think this song is so fucking right for him.

I didn’t make the perception easier with the questions posed in different directions – How they feel naturally in the flow of thoughts represented. This isn’t a dialog between Dean and Jesus. It’s about loss, religion, Sam, his dad, God, life and death in general. Dean isn’t a man of faith. He uses the tools that he has as a hunter – there is no difference between a silver bullet and an exorcism. Both are weapons and encountering the supernatural on daily basis the theodicy question doesn’t matter. The one, if they survive the fight on the other hand does. Dean doesn’t need to know why god would test humanity with suffering or tempt good people with evil, it’s just the way it is. Like he said in 2x13, ‘That's one of the perks of the job, Sam: we don't have to operate on faith. We can know for sure. Don't you want to know for sure?’

The certainty is superficial and when the gasp between reading obscure signs, following Sam’s visions and newspaper traces becomes too small, where does it lead Dean? What intrigued me was that with the survivor’s guilt Dean suffered and his willingness to throw himself into the pits of hell for no reason whatsoever - or did I miss the marching song to rescue his daddy? - His tight control slips and there are times when he just wishes to rest, to disappear, to fade and let someone else carry the responsibility. So in his depression there has to be at least a mocking voice on the back of his mind about all that religion bullshit and the comfort it obviously inspires in the general population.

Dean believes in free will, even when he has a hard time coming to terms with John’s choice. And he believes in the power of certain holy objects, rites and deals. – So in order to do his job, he has to accept a higher power and the occult, but these entities don’t rule his live. God has the same amount of authority like the Feds or the law enforcement - Next to nothing. But death has an impact, demons have – and I think not knowing when the end really occurs is stressing enough and puts Dean pleading with Sam to just let him go into perspective.

There is also the demon aspect strongly woven into this vid, represented with Meg and the crossroad one. Both showing personal interest in fucking his life over, still Dean manages to hold his ground with them. They are obviously interesting for different reasons in the context of faith. So while Meg’s host can be placed neatly in the reign of blonde women he couldn’t save, her coming back in Sam’s body hits closer home and shows Dean’s powerlessness entirely to deal with putting Sam down when going over the edge. I think we will have more fun with the things they hint at later in Season 3, which brings me to Sam blowing away the crossroad demon without any regards to her host.

Killing a human trapped - something they were big to emphasis in the first two seasons as almost immoral and that is now losing impact with all the freed demons running loose causing chaos. Sam killing this demon could be argued as pre-emptive strike for potential further victims and yet, it tastes of impatience and just losing his grip. So yeah, this ship is going down in sight of land and there’s nothing Dean can do about at the moment like in the past.

The vid starts of with Dean walking away from his little family portrait and the two toy soldiers facing each other, mirrored in shouting match when the big secret came out. And it wraps itself up with the bloody claw marks on two trees. Silently speaking of violence and still standing, so Dean looking down to the childlike and colourful picture of a home. Because everything comes down to family for Dean and there lies the only absolute trust he knows. The question occurs naturally, if it is enough with Sam becoming reckless in his attempts to save him this time around, because his brother and dad were always better at the single-minded obsession.

And with all my talking I hardly explained the video or Dean’s PoV at all – I guess you’re bound to find out for yourself.

The Journey? This vid gave me major headaches, tempted me in the last six months more than one time to just dump its ass and yet I kept coming back to it. Especially once [livejournal.com profile] charmax showed me her ‘Deus Ibi Est’ and it hit me hard that we both tried our hands on spookily similar themes – faith. Obviously her John PoV is utter perfection and nothing will come close to it, but I think watching these two videos side by side makes you automatically think about the ways John broke Dean’s trust, fucked him up and how his choices affected his son’s life.

So this video was very hard for me to grasp and there went some serious thinking into the clip choices and reconsidering. Dean’s not finished, he hasn’t had his last saying in what he believes in, so it was very refreshing to play with the images the words inspired and find out for myself what carried the most meaning for me. I have to say I worked on this video for so long the meanings have tripled and multiplied, insert the fun fact that I was thinking fucking long before I started vidding this particular song in the first place and you get that this was intended as very different vid.

Technical notes worth mentioning? First time I seriously tweaked around with the final export in Avisynth and ended up with two variations, that both made it hard to decide for me. The clearer and more colourful one got the green light, even when I really loved the gritty dirty one that got canned. I worked on some smoother transitions with adding a multiply layer. The one obvious effect with Dean and Sam fading into nothing is just a simple dissolve tweaked around. No camera movement is lovely for these.

Final note: I don’t want any religious nut jobs coming around, so this music video will be alternatively named ‘Wood and Nails’ on streaming sites, because people who type ‘Jesus Christ’ into a search engine creep me out and I like to fly under their particular radar. I would also love to hear your thoughts on this one. Feedback is awesome.

Wow. Just...WOW.
It was hard waiting so long for a new vid from you, but this was worth it.

In a tie for the moment of perfection trophy stands the shots of fire combined with 'float through the ceiling', and 'hate factory' linked with use of religious imagery.

And as a coincdental side note, I have been listening to this song almost non-stop (or 'religiously', heh) for the past 2 weeks

So I guess you approve of the song choice then? Heh. Out of curiosity did Dean came to mind while listening to it on repeat? Because I seriously fought this song choice once Dean occurred for at least two or three weeks before even opening Premiere and started to get the idea out of my system. It was near the point of haunting me… I just had to give in at the end.

The way the songs builds up in the intensity and yet holds back despair till ‘hate factory’ is amazing. It’s hard to pin down a favourite moment, but I agree that the section around ‘float through the ceiling’ just works for me startlingly well.

Okay, I’m very happy that the wait paid off in the end and you loved the vid. Thanks for your wonderful feedback.

Over from [personal profile] sol_se's rec.

Can't say enough good things about this - Jesus Christ is one of my ultimate angsty Dean season 3 songs, (I'm not quite sure why, but it feels like all of Dean's fear and disapointment and pain all packed into 4 minutes) and I've considered learing about this whole vidding thing just to do it. I could never do it justice, but you sure as hell did :)

Just lovely!

I’m pretty sure this video had ended up very different, if I hadn’t discovered the song around 2x17 and I felt like it touched so many things that must have been going through Dean’s head around that time. Once the season finale was aired it became a strong build up and using some scenes from season three really brought some points home. Actually I feel like the show pushes in the song direction like you said for season 3. With the earlier finding the video in itself has a broader foundation in all seasons, because I think I would have neglected the first season completely, if the idea had hit me later.

But I’m absolutely thrilled that you thought I did the song justice, I know how it feels to see a song vidded that inspires you and the scene choices don’t match up with the ones you have in your head or it has a different focus. It can be surprisingly awesome or in the worst scenario leave a bad taste. So thank you for your wonderful comment, it means a lot.

another beautiful video... if only i understood the context. But still very enjoyable. And oh those religious nuts aren't they fun. Also by writing this mountain of explanation i no longer feel guilty for blabbing about my own vids.

But it made me think, whats your position on audio vid commentary? Also weren't we in the middle of having sex just after your birthday and you disappeared?

posted by [identity profile] astartexx.livejournal.com at 09:34pm on 12/11/2007
So now you know how I feel when you come with some strange fandom and all I can think is, ‘Oh gorgeous, I wonder what it all means in context.’ *grin*

And no, religion is something that has the tendency to get awfully ugly real fast in groups, even when it means hypocrisy like in my small corner of the world. If you go every Sunday to church, it’s alright to gossip about your neighbours for half an hour afterwards. Is it strange to still say I’m trying to be a good Christ, even when I never go to church at all? Not even at Christmas or have I tone it down to decent human being then?

I love vid commentary both in writing or audio form, even when the later isn’t something I would try. I feel fairly secure to get my point across in written English. But bumping my way through slowed down versions of my vids won’t happen. Hence my 1.500 words of non-explanation on top. I felt that I need to explain my scene choices next and then I would have ended with a ten pages essay. *laughs* But I would love to some audio commentary on a few of your vids, love.

I did cop out of our sex again? You need to tie me up next time around.

Ooh, I missed your SN vids! Utterly wonderful work here, I guess I would've never considered the song a 'Dean-song' but the way you visualize it, it works very well.

There were several parts that broke my heart, especially the clip of Dean, walking alone the rows of gravestones to 'when I arrive I won't know anyone', the referral to John's death and Dean's deal as the 'problems that last more than a weekend and the flow of clips in which Sam shoots Dean to the lyrical line of 'and turned out a hate factory'. Also, the Impala as the 'gold chariot' with the bright light effect is beautiful.

Really loved this and will surely watch it over and over again to catch every nuance in it. :)

It’s wonderful to have the boys in shiny DVD glory on my hard drive again, because replacing footage in projects is such a time effort that the laziness curbs my enthusiasm to edit and it’s so cool to finally release a video. And who knows I probably will finish another light hearted one before new year. *is positive*

I get what you mean about the song. It doesn’t sound like Dean at first from the music choice, but the lyrics really did me in. Plus multiply choices for lyrics are always favourable and the background of Charmax ‘Deus Ibi Est’ tied some mental loose ends for me.

I need to share my gleefulness about that section you mentioned with the graveyard. The build up before with Mary walking past Dean, Sam caged in his own drunken misery and then the graveyard feels like such a skewed testament of the Winchester family dynamic and Dean naturally taking care of them. There is so much meaning packed into that one sentence and how what Dean wants has the tendency to always be just beyond his reach.

How the gold chariot turned out was so unexpected, I squeed when I first exported that section. The road beneath him and his brother at his side – I think that’s so close to heaven as Dean expects to get.

Thank you for such a amazing feedback and enjoy the repeats.

Hurrah, you posted it at last! I'll go rec this in a minute. Thanks again for your kind words about Deus, It's freaky the way they play so well together.

It seems to have evolved quite a bit from the draft you showed me, not least in the fact that it is all bright and shiny now. I'm a bit surprised you went with the more colourful output I would've figured you for going with the gritty. The colour works great though particularly in the way it plays against the B&W.

"This ship is going down in sight of land" breaks my heart, he goes through all that and still can't keep Sam from sinking into the same obsessive behaviour John exhibited. What faith Dean has is tested to the limit in this vid, no wonder he only puts his trust in family and fire-power, he'd be a fool to do otherwise.

It's a beautiful vid that really seems to speak for Dean. I absolutely love it.
Oh and while you may have avoided the religious nutjobs there is always a possibility that "Wood and Nails" might attract carpentry freaks. :D

They do indeed, I was so happy we got a double rec from [livejournal.com profile] sol_se, because ‘Jesus Christ’ really gets a whole new meaning when you watch your ‘Deus’ as introduction. Believe me, I did it multiply times already. It piggybacks gracefully on your larger than life shoulders. *laughs*

Yeah, the DVD source shines and made making the CW emblem go away in Season 3 all more important. Mostly zooming in, but also some multiply layers there, when I had the feeling it was too claustrophobic to zoom into Dean’s nostrils. What brings me to the gritty final, one reason against it, was that the already filtered parts would have been almost B/W and I had to ask myself the question, if that was worth the effort put into these parts. It looked fine in the 1,64 GB Huffy export, but lost its impact seized down to reasonable download size and just looked like a sloppy source or encoding error. Plus I really love how the colour pops into the enhanced scenes, it really brings out the background in some shots and the smoothness is also in favour of the dl encodes.

The ship line is really improved over the draft I sent you and took on a whole other meaning here. Not the obvious one you had to deal with… *tongue in cheek* Sam growing up and them growing apart is one of the main themes of season 3, but I think the roots go deeper even deeper than the visions or Dean running out of time or him dealing with his own shit. Sam’s personality is too similar to John’s to just take Dean’s decision as last word on the subject and while understandably it won’t start the bonding over this sacrifice soon. Sad shores indeed and them drifting apart is almost painful to watch.

I absolutely agree about Dean choosing to believe in his family and fire-power is the sane thing to do, because they come through for him. But I also like the aspect thrown in with apostle Thomas. The sceptic, who said he needed to lay his fingers in the stigmas to believe Jesus came back from the dead. Because even if Dean came so far as heavens gates all he can show off is human blood on his hands, but no marks. In both cases of the video the humans were unaware and not in control of their supernatural spice-up or the dead priest who thought he became an angel and was doing gods work instead of vengeance. But taking a human life is always huge and leaves a stain, so Dean feeling worthless and/or belonging in hell anyway just gets another layer.

Thank you so much for your incredible feedback, [livejournal.com profile] charmax and of course the rec. And call me naïve, but I think carpentry freaks are easier to handle than the ones who are enlighten and know the only saviour.

Glad you approved the song choice and the B/W effect, even when I have to confess that I turned the saturation up overall, but there is sadly no way around to turning it down for the seasons 3 clips. I really don’t know why they had to change the unique style of our show. Tsk.

That was gorgeous.
I'm off to DL the big, pretty version.

I love your transitions between the black and white and color, they were very seamless but they worked wonderfully.
And I also really love that the clips you chose, felt very fresh and new and it made for a vid that I couldn't take my eyes off of.

The song was lovely and it was a very fitting song for Dean, you chose some awesome clips, plus there was some very good beat use in there and yeah, just an all around, really stunning vid :)

posted by [identity profile] astartexx.livejournal.com at 09:09pm on 13/11/2007
Thank you so much for this wonderful feedback, I’m really obsessed with transitions, I don’t mind missing a beat or three, but if something bugs me about a particular transition I can loose hours trying to fix it. Good thing I’m now at the point to solve most things without second guessing myself into unconsciousness. *laughs*

I’m also happy you thought that the clips seemed fresh, because I used a lot of establishing shots for the big storylines. Even when I think that the focus is on lesser known and using some of them in length instead and I hope without pulling the audience out of the vid with asking them where to place them on the timeline. So you not able to take your eyes off is a huge compliment in that regard.

The lyrics were wonderful to work with and I felt like I was about to discover a whole new shade of this character while vidding. So it became an interesting experience for me. Thanks again and I’m pleased you enjoyed the vid.

That was an amazing video! One of the best I have ever seen (and I've seen a lot of Supernatural videos...). Your use of color and motion was breath taking and your interpretation of Dean was, in my opinion, spot on.

Again, thank you for making such a wonderful video.

You’re very welcome and of course thank you so much for this huge compliment and your wonderful rec. I’m also happy you agreed with the interpretation, I surely feared that I was going with too emo, but in the end felt like he had in truth a reason to be depressed and plain sceptical.

Everyone is singing praises of this vid and I'm going to add my voice to the pile. Making a vid is hard enough, making one that means something is something else. Using clips that are new and fresh and not overused, is that harder than making a vid that means something? I don't even know, having not made one. The simple task (simple, ha!) of determine which clips to use stops me cold every time. Love the multiple layer effect, how one visual idea blends in with another, and then another. Dean is so racked with guilt, pain, grief, worry, you name it, he's got it. And you show it. Dude. Seriously.

posted by [identity profile] astartexx.livejournal.com at 01:31pm on 15/11/2007
For me choosing clips is one of the most rewarding things of vidding. I mean obviously it is the reason why we vid in the first place, but watching the song meaning evolve with certain scenes and hinting at underrepresented nuances with others? It’s just amazing. Seriously, the moment when you drag a clip on your timeline and the vid becomes alive right before your eyes? Always the Best moment, only topped once you watch an export and you know bone-deep that this vid is finished for good.

Clip choice is also such a manipulative act. It’s astonishing how you can convert different emotions simply by picking a certain scene. You can make your main character look like a saint or an asshole and there lies the real power of vidders. So you should definitely reconsider trying it again, because you obviously have already learned the most important lesson of vidding: Chose your clips wisely and give them thought.

And thank you so much for this feedback, I’m happy you enjoyed the vid so much and the ideas it plays with.

Thank you so much, I’m happy you enjoyed the vid, even when I felt like I barely scratched the surface of the thought process behind the clip choices. I really wanted to explain some of them, when I realised I was already at 1.000 words and nobody would read through the notes, if I would go on like that. Besides it’s up to the audience to decide, if the clip choices work.

Your technical skills are really impressive- I particularly liked the dissolve of Sam and Dean on the road.

Now that was really fun, once I made sure that the camera in fact didn’t move between the shot of them in the background and near the road sign later. No need for excessive tweaking is always cool, when you just can do your idea and move on.

Glad you enjoyed the vid and the notes, I feel like they only scratched the surface of what I really wanted to say. And thank you so much for your feedback and of course your awesome rec.

THIS IS SO SPECTACULARLY AMAZING.
I think the song really fits with Dean and his beliefs.

Happy you agree with the song, since I felt so ambivalent about it. Mostly because I thought that I couldn’t convert all my reasons to vid it. So thank you so much, for your comment.

I'm entirely too speechless to properly review this vid. I'm here via [livejournal.com profile] crack_impala, btw.

You've seriously captured the essence of the song if it could ever be captured. And this goes for using the clips you used. I've loved the band and this song since last year and I truly cannot think of any other version of a vid for it. You've done the song and show justice, and you deserve more comments than the ones I've read. This is also someone who sees the song for what it really is because I was nodding all the way through your explanation of how the song would fit Dean, etc. And it DOES by the way, I was open-mouthed half way through thinking, "why didn't I see this before when I've repeated the track so many times?!"

ANYWAYS, enough rambling! You win. :D Will be reccing soon.

First of all WOW, thank you so much for your mind-blowing comment. Seriously. Second for all my doubts if I could capture, why this was the perfect Dean song, you sure think that I did a convincing job.

Choosing this song was a strange experience, because as a vidder you always listen with half an ear for characters you want to vid. This song on repeat was one of the few were I couldn’t associate any character and listened just for the brilliance of the lyrics. It was a perfect writing song for me. Till that mocking voice teased me with the ‘pretty face’ and suddenly I couldn’t stop seeing connections to Dean and how the words relate to the developments in his life.

The song rapidly took on an entirely new meaning and I’m happy you agree with my conclusions there. One of my biggest fears was that I wouldn’t do the song justice, because it is so clever and multilayered. The different use of Jesus Christ alone and how the name feels like it changes from an expletive to a denomination and then proper noun, when the dialog gets more intimate and feels like a confession? That was the stuff that made me nervous beforehand. Understanding the song for myself and translating that into Dean and then back to the audience? Well, it was an intimidating task to say at least. Plus I knew that I needed to pull back on the emotions and do an understated version of Dean in context of the lyrics, because him bawling his pretty eyes out, would entirely destroy the mood I was aiming for.

I babble and someone should stop me. But I enjoyed your feedback so much. Thank you again.
