First of all WOW, thank you so much for your mind-blowing comment. Seriously. Second for all my doubts if I could capture, why this was the perfect Dean song, you sure think that I did a convincing job.
Choosing this song was a strange experience, because as a vidder you always listen with half an ear for characters you want to vid. This song on repeat was one of the few were I couldn’t associate any character and listened just for the brilliance of the lyrics. It was a perfect writing song for me. Till that mocking voice teased me with the ‘pretty face’ and suddenly I couldn’t stop seeing connections to Dean and how the words relate to the developments in his life.
The song rapidly took on an entirely new meaning and I’m happy you agree with my conclusions there. One of my biggest fears was that I wouldn’t do the song justice, because it is so clever and multilayered. The different use of Jesus Christ alone and how the name feels like it changes from an expletive to a denomination and then proper noun, when the dialog gets more intimate and feels like a confession? That was the stuff that made me nervous beforehand. Understanding the song for myself and translating that into Dean and then back to the audience? Well, it was an intimidating task to say at least. Plus I knew that I needed to pull back on the emotions and do an understated version of Dean in context of the lyrics, because him bawling his pretty eyes out, would entirely destroy the mood I was aiming for.
I babble and someone should stop me. But I enjoyed your feedback so much. Thank you again.
NO PROBLEM on the fb, seriously, I had to say it all because I really, really meant it. And now that I'm listening to the song again, [right now actually] and I read your further explanation on what was going on through your head when you made the vid, I can see why you'd have all those doubts. The song does tend to skip around with Jesus Christ, and really listening to the song and putting the music and lyrics to Dean, I am truly amazed I couldn't put two and two together. I've loved this song for awhile and the band for even longer, so I love that this song is the one I currently relate Dean to. Thanks for THAT. :D
..because him bawling his pretty eyes out, would entirely destroy the mood I was aiming for.
I TOTALLY AGREE. That would take away from the song's meaning and intention completely, and that's why I love the direction you took with the vid, the way it flowed made you ache and feel for Dean without actually having to see him cry every 2 or so seconds. That for me, wouldn't have made the same impact as a viewer.
And I just babbled more than you and I did put together, lol.
That for me, wouldn't have made the same impact as a viewer.
There is so much truth in that little sentence, because for me as viewer it sometimes becomes hard caring about my favourite characters when confronted with a vid in which they weep for 3:30 minutes. Exploiting weaknesses is half the fun for a vidder, but there needs to be some kind of balance to make me actually care. Almost like a turnaround from the good old ‘Show – don’t tell’-rule which applies to storytelling. If you zoom to close into a character there is a good chance that I as viewer really don’t like what I see or don’t agree with the conclusion.
I mean obviously vidding is about showing emotions and what touches our cold hearts as viewers, but one noted vids that linger to long on one aspect bore me personally, if its only tears and no reasons.
but there needs to be some kind of balance to make me actually care.
Exactly. I found that balance in this vid and it made me almost want to cry. [prob. TMI, but oh well.] It was the balance that created this emotional wave in my head, it was really intense envisioning all those things going on in Dean's head. And as a viewer it made me think, 'wow, what if Dean actually thinks this way? Is he actually afraid? Is he feeling more than he's ever felt now that he's made this deal?' It was so many eye-opening thoughts like those that kept me riveted, literally.
I really enjoy reading what went into making this. :)
Do you mind if I friend? You seem like a really well put-together person and I really enjoy reading your insight. Plus, this video blew my mind, if you couldn't tell, lmao.
If you don’t mind my German fics? Friend away… *laughs* I rarely spam my flist and should probably comment more often, but I avidly read my friends posts. I would be very happy to have you there -
I have to say that I find videos pulling their punches and giving you more thoughts than answers the most satisfying as a viewer. Teasing you with new views and sucking your right into a mysterious maze of ‘what if’s’ like for example charmax`Protégé moi’ (http://bronze-ambition.net/wp/?p=390) are the ones I want to make when I grow up. If there is enough room for interpretation and you leave some things up for the imagination of the audience, it is surprising what you can get at out of a vid as a viewer.
